Laelia
Laelia is a genus that comprises over 70 different species
of orchids that are closely related to Cattleyas. Many species are epiphytic,
but some, the so-called “rupiculous laelias”, are lithophytic,
growing on the ground, on stone outcroppings. Laelias are native to
South and Central America and Mexico. They vary from miniature plants
with flower stalks only a few inches long to medium-sized or large plants
with flower stalks several feet long. Many have brightly colored flowers
that are long-lasting, and may be fragrant. Laelias have been hybridized
extensively with Cattleya, Brassavola, Sophronitis, and other genera,
giving rise to the “L” in Lc, Blc, Slc, etc. Most Laelias
are easy to grow and tolerant of a wide variety of cultural conditions.
Laelia anceps, which we offer for sale, can take temperatures from over
100 degrees F to below freezing. It is also drought tolerant. There
are many different forms of L anceps, ranging in color from bright purple
or pink to pure white. Some have flares or other color patterns. Whether
you’re just starting to explore orchid species or are a hard-core
species nut looking for exotic and unusual items, Laelias have a lot
to offer.
